Guernsey Law is an interesting mix of French Norman Law and English Law requiring Guernsey "Advocates" (Lawyers) to spend
time training in France before they can practice on the Island.
This law is different from the UK and if you move to Guernsey you need to be aware that there are many differences across
a range of topics.
Borrowing in Guernsey for example is virtually always secured on Property. Very few of the financing options you might
expect if you have lived and worked in the UK apply here.
Laws on the use of drugs are extremely strict with automatic jail sentences of up to 7 years for offenders. Also there
is no points system on your driving licence here, you are just fined and put off the road according to the level of the transgression.
Drink driving can see you automatically suspended from driving for at least 3 years.
Property sales have to be processed through an Advocate and you need to go to court for the purchasing process.
There is no Capital Gains, (except on the sale of a property within a 12 month and a day period from the date it was
last bought - 100% tax on any profit made) or Inheritance taxes on the Island. The inheritance laws are interesting!
Driving rules are very different and need to be learnt before you venture on to the roads. The maximum speed limit is
35 mph, with many areas covered by lower limits.
When you move to the Island it is best to discuss any legal matters or concerns you might have with a Guernsey Advocate.
